The Zapatero Cocktail

The Mezcal Bourbon Old Fashioned (sometimes called a "Zapatero" cocktail) is a smoky, spirit-forward twist on the classic drink that blends the earthy, smoky notes of mezcal with the familiar caramel and vanilla notes of bourbon. Kevin enjoyed this  very much.

  • 1 ½ oz Mezcal (e.g., El Silencio or Del Maguey Vida)
  • ½ oz Bourbon (e.g., Booker's or Knob Creek)
  • 2 tsp
    Orgeat
(almond syrup; can substitute with simple syrup or agave nectar)
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash Chocolate bitters (or mole bitters)
  • Garnish: Orange twist and freshly grated cinnamon
  1. Combine ingredients: Add the mezcal, bourbon, orgeat, Angostura bitters, and chocolate bitters into a mixing glass.
  2. Add ice and stir: Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir the mixture for about 20-30 seconds, until it is well-chilled and properly diluted.
  3. Strain: Strain the mixture into a rocks glass over a large, fresh ice cube.
  4. Garnish: Express the oils from an orange peel over the glass by twisting it, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink. Finish with a dusting of freshly grated cinnamon.
